New player, Melee/BM for PvE
-
I am an NGE baby, I never played on Live before NGE so the system in play here is a mystery to me but here goes.
I've been playing on and off on the Legends server for a few years but on a full NGE server, melee is mostly for Spy or Jedi - Ranged is the go to almost everywhere however I like melee builds and in every MMO if you can have a pet at your side, I want one so beastmaster is a must have for me.
How do I go about creating a build like this? I don't want to have characters on follow so please keep that in mind.

Well you have come to the right place. We have strong melee builds here, some of our best pve and pvp players play a melee build. Here is an example of a BM Melee build type. I would suggest the Steel Body jewelry set to help make you nice and tanky.

Welcome Cheatmeal,
Mechanics here are based off of NGE, but the development of character is totally custom mimicking PreCU/CU. I like melee builds and have posted some under the Player Build section of the forum here. Also have some basic tutorials under the Player Guides Section, may refer to Guide from Zero to Hero, Level 1 to 90, and Katarn Armor are good start for new players. Leveling is very fast so no waste of time there. Gearing up takes time but you should be good to go with basic gear in a hour or two.Historical reactions: Like × 1

Appreciate the replies. I went with the build posted above for now, only thing missing was the Tera Kasi expertise but I figured it was the defensive things like innate armor and such so picked those. Finished the Katarn Armor questline a few minutes ago so just need to shop for a better weapon now and start hunting for things to get a pet.
First and foremost gonna go celebrate Christmas with friends.
Merry Christmas and happy holidays.

Creature Handler you can go tame pets here like the old days PreCU.
Beast Master you can hatch a Bio Engineered Pet and control them, they provide some boost to your stats, need at least 9 points in Beast Master to remove the debuff.
Bio Pets you can create with a Bio Engineer crafter, or purchase from other players. There is a Player Guide on the forum explaining different ways to get credits, recommend joining the server when they do World Boss fights, you get alot of credits by participating, no requirement on gear to participate.Historical reactions: Like × 1

Maybe CH is better until I can actually either craft my own or buy an egg from someone else?

BM is more powerful. CH is still a work-in-progress.

just out of curiosity what are your AA's and Exotics with this build

I change suits around from time to time, but I was probably wearing a str/BV/luck with offensive exotics most likely weapon damage/unarmed damage/assassinate damage. I'm also a fan of heal potency so I may change assassinate dmg for HP.

Been messing around with my build on B'Ready quite a bit, having the Steel Body jewellery feels like a safer route and allows for experimentation. Right now I'm more on the Assassin/Pikeman side than the build I started with, threw in some combat medic in there - Dps during boss run was low but considering the LD issues I had and not knowing the ins and outs probably pulled it down some but combat medic doesnt do much without the Doom Jewellery I think. Idk.
Is there an alternative Ranged/BM build with Steel Body set in mind to use for both PvE and PvP (if I decide to go that route) I looked over the posted builds but most of them use Razor Cat which I do not have at this point. I feel a ranged build might be easier to learn and get into the sway of things and worry about melee later when I get properly setup.

You may need to add more heals and defensives like avoid damage and void dance (or walk, I always forget the name).

For what I'm doing I don't need either to be fair -I barely take damage if buffed, but my damage output however is low.

I second get more heals from doctor, even just 5 points to get Bacta Ampule is a big improvement for healing. Personally I would avoid Void Dance/Walk its defense is based on Glancing Blow, Glancing Blow doesn't work against Critical Hits. I would consider also taking the 8% Damage Decrease from Pikeman to get a bit more defense.

I did as suggested here, had 3 points left over which I put into Grenadier novice for the block chance. With a new weapon and the above build my dps increased quite a bit, I'm a little hesitant with the pet use. Solo it's fine but in groups like OG's it dies very, very quickly. Thinking maybe of taking it out and going into BH instead for a more personal power over having the pet by my side.
Might go back to BM later when I've created something nicer to use, not liking the angler - Not that I'm afraid of spiders it's just not vibing with me.

Yeah unless you put many points into BM, they don't live long. Also what can give pets a bit more of a boost is Doctor Buffs. Personally I just have the pet out as a companion that boosts my stats, even dead beside you, you get the stats. My latest Jedi Build I am working on has a pet for stats.
