Buffs

Buffs

A buff is a temporary boost to one or more of a character's stats. Buffs can come from a variety of sources — consumables and crafted items, profession abilities and expertise, quest and faction rewards, or NPCs out in the world.

Every buff belongs to a category, and that category is the key to understanding how buffs interact with each other. In most cases, only one buff from a given category can be active on your character at a time. Activating a second buff from the same category will either overwrite/cancel the one currently running, or simply fail to apply if the game doesn't allow an overwrite.

Categories also typically share a single reuse (cooldown) timer across every buff within them. That means even after an active buff wears off naturally, its cooldown can still be ticking — and you won't be able to activate another buff from that same category until the timer clears, regardless of which specific buff in the category you're trying to use.

Category C is the exception to this rule. Unlike other categories, buffs in Category C can be used together and do not share a reuse timer, except where individually noted. This means you can freely stack multiple Category C buffs at once without one overwriting another or being blocked by a shared cooldown.

Looking Up a Buff's Group and Cooldown

Every buff item is tagged in the game's code with two values that determine how it behaves: a Buff group (which buff family it belongs to) and a Cooldown group (which shared reuse timer it uses). Two items can look completely different in your inventory but still compete with each other if they share the same Buff group or Cooldown group underneath.

You can look these values up yourself using the EVOLVE Tools:

  1. Go to Items on the Tracker and search for the item you're curious about.
  2. Open its Item Details page.
  3. Check the Buff group and Cooldown group fields.

For example, the Wild Force Shard carries the Buff group towCrystalOffenseBurst and the Cooldown group long_reuse_3. Any other item or ability sharing that same Cooldown group will be on the same shared timer, even if their names and effects look unrelated — and anything sharing the same Buff group is competing for the same buff slot.

Use this tool alongside the category tables below whenever you're unsure if two buffs will stack, overwrite each other, or share a cooldown — the raw group names are the ground truth, even when an item's flavor text doesn't make the relationship obvious.

Category E - Food & Drink Category

Food and Drink buffs function as separate buff types and occupy their own respective buff slots.

One Food item and one Drink item buff may be active at the same time. Consuming a new food or Drink will replace the currently active buff of that same type.

Food and Drink buffs do not share a reuse timer. Reusing the same item will extend its duration, while consuming a different item of the same type will overwrite the current buff.

On Evolve, Food has been updated to provide a base duration of 20 minutes per use and can be stacked up to a maximum of 2 hours (Few exceptions noted below).

Many Food and Drink Items have also had their statistics adjusted on Evolve.

Food and Drink are primarily crafted by Chefs, with Evolve introducing rare drop schematics that allow for the creation of enhanced Food and Drink Items.
