Feeling like your armor could use a lift from the Katarn armor. Willing to put in the work to create the specialized armor, this guide will help you.
This guide assumes you have already leveled up a crafter and they are Expertised completely in Armorsmith.

There is three sections I want to focus on
1. Preparing to craft armor
2. Maximize gear for crafting armor
3. How to craft armor
4. Crafting a Suit of Armor
Section 1 - Preparing to craft armor
You will need a weapon crafting station and a crafting tool.
Weapon Crafting Station should have a Functional Rating of 45.
Weapon Crafting Tool with Effectiveness of 15.
I prefer to buy these 2 items.

You will also need a variety of resources.
I like to lay them out in packs on my wall and organize them.
Top of the pyramid I have factory run weapon components, soon to include Armor Cores.
Above the resource blocks I have High Quality Resources.
Below the resource blocks I have leftover Lower Quality Resources.
You will also want to obtain lots of Bespin Port Drink, also Pyollian Cake Food or Deenelian Fizz Pudding Food.
Get a Cybernetic Deconstruction Arm, this is a collection from surveying (Not with a Universal Survey Tool), as you get samples a menu will pop up asking if you want to find a High Quality resource, YES. Complete the collections with each survey tool to be rewarded with the Cybernetic Deconstruction Arm.
Section 2 - Maximize gear for crafting armor
QoL (Quality of Life) improvement here, the expertise alone has enough Assembly to guarantee a socket. Also you need not craft as many Posed Stormtrooper Statues.
What we desperately need is as much Experimentation as possible, Luck provides and increased chance of getting Critical craft.
Following is what I use to maximize Luck and Experimentation.
Armorsmith Toolset?, 5 Armor Assembly, 5 Armor Experimentation, it is a wearable container. (? Quest Reward, suggest purchase from another player).
Belt (35 Luck).
Cybernetic Deconstruction Arm (110 Luck)
5 Piece Jewelry Set (275 Luck, 25 Armor Assembly, 25 Armor Experimentation, 6 Amazing Success Chance, 5 Armorsmith Complexity Decrease, 5 Resource Quality Increase).
7 Piece Armor Suit (35 Luck each piece, chest has 11 Armor Assembly, 8 Armor Experimentation, 3 Armor Experimentation Baked In). Note you have Cybernetic Deconstruction Arm that replaces 2 pieces of Armor.
1 Weapon (35 Luck, 11 Armor Assembly, 8 Armor Experimentation, 3 Armor Experimentation Baked In)
1 Shirt (35 Luck, 11 Armor Assembly, 8 Armor Experimentation).
3 PuPs (117 Luck) Weapon, Clothing, Armor.
Food Deenelian Fizz Pudding (200+ Luck)
Entertainer Inspiration Buff (300 Luck, 4% Amazing Success Chance)
Smuggler GCW Flag Buff (100 Luck)
Smuggler Off the Books Buff (50 Luck)
Mysterious Jax Familiar (50 Luck). From Galactic Moon Festival Vendor.
A Bio Pet trained with Helper Monkey ? (10 Armor Assembly, 10 Armor Experimentation). (Obtained from ? Collection, and a trained monkey).
Owned House in a Township, Research Center (15% Bonus Experimentation Roll Bonus (Helps achieve better results during experimentation).
2 Optional buffs to push Luck, Revitalization Pack or Shard of Retaliation (200 Luck), and High Morale Victory (Mustafar Droid Army Heroic Completion Reward 200 Luck, 1hr).
Further push Luck by getting Reverse Engineering Expertise (700 Luck).
The above selection will be 1 Experimentation from crafting perfect crafts, minus critical success crafts.
YOU DO NOT REQUIRE ALL OF THE ABOVE TO CAP ARMOR, 5 Piece Jewelry Set, Armor Suit, Weapon, Shirt should be enough to Cap.
Section 3 - How to craft armor
If your building a Assault, Battle, or Reconnaissance armor the process is relatively the same. Armor is made from components, below is diagrams that break the armor down into there components. When crafting you will build from the bottom and work your way to the top.

As you can see from the diagrams each piece of armor is made up of subcomponents. It would be good to create factory runs of these component to save time.
When you reach the point of crafting the Armor Suit you will need identical Armor Cores to complete the crafting of a full suit, these Cores will need to come from a factory crate created from a factory using a schematic, this guide will explain how to make schematics and all subcomponents for Battle Armor.
Step 1. Apply crafting buffs.

(Note armor is more resource quality restricted vs weapon crafting, you can craft armor without all these buffs, you should be able to cap armor with just a Crafting Suit and 5 Piece Armorsmith Jewelry Set, but to achieve the best results you will need the buffs above along with a full crafting suit, ).
Much like Weapon crafting you will need to start with the bottom component and work your way up.
In demonstration we are going to look at our bottom component Armor Layer.
Once all Buffs are applied open your crafting tool window. Armor Tab > Armor Layer > Advanced Armor Layer Primus.
(Note the other Secundas and Tertius Advanced Armor Layers are also good options for niche defense. Primus provides the highest primary damage type Energy and Kinetic).

Notice the Resources required, Neutronium Steel, Polymer, Gravitonic Fiberplast, Vintrium Extrusive Ore, Perovskitic Aluminum.
The Stats on these Resources that effect Max and Min Damage Modifier of the Advanced Armor Layer Primus is Overall Quality and Shock Resistance both contribute 50%. You will want resources that match the type and preferably 900+ Conductivity and Overall Quality not all resources achieve this as of yet on this server, to obtain past resources you can use a Free Resource Crate obtained from the Daily Token Vendor.
Moving on to the next screen we can see how these Resources affect the construction of the Advanced Armor Layer Primus.

Pane on the left I have the Neutronium Steel highlighted, it has a Overall Quality of 927, and Shock Resistance of 717. (By double left mouse clicking it will populate the center pane).
Center pane gives us a gauge that is green in this example, lower Stat quality of Conductivity and Overall Quality in this example would lower this gauge and it would turn yellow or even red.
Right Pane at the bottom we see how the Overall Quality and Shock Resistance plays out in the calculating the value of Defense.
Next after selecting Assemble and hitting the confirmation that follows we see the starting results of the Defense Stats.

Starting results ended with an assembly of a great success! (In personal testing components have a maximum results that achieving amazing or critical may not push any higher).
We also reached a value of 28% out of 30% in this example.
